Guide · How to Battle Other Players

How to battle other people.

You built a team. Now you need an opponent. Champions gives you three doors to another human — matchmaking on the ranked ladder, matchmaking with nothing on the line, or a private room you invite a friend into with a code. Here's exactly how to open each one.

Quick answer

How do I battle other players in Pokemon Champions?

From the title screen press A and choose Battle, then select Ranked Battles or Casual Battles and hit Begin Matchmaking to be paired with another Trainer. To battle a specific friend, use Private Battles: Make a Room, press X to reveal the Room ID, and share that code for them to join.
  • Ranked & Casual pair you automatically via matchmaking
  • Private Battles connect friends with a shareable Room ID
  • Champions uses its own friend list, not your Switch friends

Ranked Battles

Skill-based matchmaking that pairs you with a Trainer near your rank. This is the ladder — wins push your rank meter up a quarter, losses drain it a quarter, so it takes four net wins to clear a rank.

  1. 01Press A on the title screen, then choose Battle.
  2. 02Select Ranked Battles.
  3. 03Pick Single Battle or Double Battle — they are separate ladders with separate ranks.
  4. 04Choose your battle team, then select Begin Matchmaking.

Ranked also pays out VP — the currency that gates Stat Points, moves, and Tera types. Doubles is the competitive tournament format; if you're here to prep for events, ladder Doubles.

Casual Battles

Same matchmaking, zero rank stakes. Your rank doesn't move whether you win or lose — this is where you test a new team, learn a matchup, or shake off rust before laddering.

  1. 01Press A on the title screen, then choose Battle.
  2. 02Select Casual Battles.
  3. 03Pick Single or Double Battle.
  4. 04Choose your team and select Begin Matchmaking.

Best place to trial a Replica Team you just imported before you risk rank on it.

Private Battles (Room ID)

Battle a specific person — a friend, a training partner, your league. You create a room, share its Room ID, and they enter the code to join. You control the rules, format, and who's in.

  1. 01From the menu, open Private Battles and select Make a Room.
  2. 02Set your rules and format, then confirm the room.
  3. 03Press X to view the Room ID — a shareable code.
  4. 04Send the Room ID to whoever you want in. They pick Enter a Room ID, type it, and confirm.
  5. 05Once players are in, choose a seat and select Battle.

A room holds up to 12 players, with up to 8 battling at once — two players per battle. Rules are fully yours: format, clauses, team comp.

Heads up — Champions keeps its own in-game friend list — it does not use your Nintendo Switch friends. Add people by sharing user IDs in-game first if you want them saved.

Coverage note

What about Single Battles?

Ranked Singles is a real ladder with its own ranks, and plenty of players start there. Straight answer: ChampDex's strategy guides, meta rankings, and Replica Teams cover the competitive Doublesformat — that's what tournaments and official events run, and it's where all of our live usage and team data comes from. We'd rather tell you that than serve singles content with nothing behind it.

The fundamentals transfer, though. Stat Points and the 66 cap, natures, the VP economy, speed benchmarks, type coverage, and single-target damage math work identically on the Singles ladder. What doesn't transfer: Doubles team comps, spread moves, redirection and Fake Out support logic, and the meta pages.

Bonus · Scheduled events

Online Competitions

Beyond the always-on ladder, Champions runs official Online Competitions — timed events (usually around four days) that pair you random-matchup style and track a separate competition score. You register a squad in your Battle Box, then battle within the event window. Wins and losses move your points; a disconnect is recorded as a loss, so don't rage-quit.

These are where the real prizes and seeding live. ChampDex tracks the brackets and winning teams from Champions events on the Tournaments page — study what topped the last one before you enter the next.

Before you queue

Matchmaking will throw you into a Bring-6, Pick-4 doubles game against real prep. Don't ladder blind. Load a proven Replica Team so you have something legal and coherent, skim the current threats so nothing surprises you in Team Preview, and know your speed benchmarks cold — Champions runs a fast 45-second turn clock.

Menu steps verified against Nintendo Support and Serebii. In-game menu labels may shift with updates.
