How to Counter the Meta
The top threats change weekly. Here's how to consistently find answers to whatever's popular.
The Counter-Teaming Mindset
Counter-teaming means building your team to beat the most common threats. Check the Meta Snapshot — if 40% of teams run the same 3 Pokemon, your team should handle all three comfortably.
The key insight: you don't need to counter everything. Focus on the top 5-10 most-used Pokemon. If your team beats them consistently, you'll win more than you lose.

Counter Strategies by Type
Against Water types (Rain teams)
Grass types, Storm Drain/Water Absorb users, Drought to weaken Water moves. See the Rain Team Guide for detailed counters.
Against Fire types (Sun teams)
Rock types (resist Fire, Rock Slide spread), Flash Fire immunity, Rain to weaken Fire. See the Sun Team Guide.
Against Trick Room
Taunt, Imprison + TR, KO the setter, or stall out the turns. See the Trick Room Guide.
Against Intimidate cycling
Defiant/Competitive abilities (get +2 Attack/SpA when Intimidated), special attackers, Clear Body/White Smoke.
Against priority spam
Psychic Terrain blocks priority, Armor Tail/Queenly Majesty abilities, bulky Pokemon that tank hits.
Using ChampDex Tools for Counter-Teaming
1. Check the meta: Meta Snapshot shows what's popular. Note the top 5-10 Pokemon.
2. Find counters: Use What Beats This? to find Pokemon that handle specific threats.
3. Verify damage: Run your counters through the Damage Calculator. Can you actually KO the threats? Can you survive their hits?
4. Check speed: Use Speed Tiers to verify you outspeed the threats (or run speed control).
5. Build the team: Load your answers into the Team Builder and check coverage/weaknesses.
Anti-Meta Tips
- Don't over-counter. If your whole team is built to beat one archetype, you auto-lose to everything else. Have versatile Pokemon that handle multiple threats.
- Surprise factor. Uncommon Pokemon that counter meta threats have an edge because opponents don't know how to play against them.
- Items matter. Safety Goggles blocks Spore/Sleep Powder. Assault Vest adds special bulk. Covert Cloak blocks secondary effects. These often matter more than the Pokemon choice.
- Prep for best-of-3. In tournament sets, you get to adjust your 4 picks after seeing the opponent's team. Use the Pre-Match Advisor to plan.
